Description ElGuido 2003-09-20 06:36:47 UTC
I'd recently messed up my gentoo by being silly, so I d/led the latest iso
from which to do my rescue. I would then pick the smp kernel, which would go
fine, then I'd mount up my reiser partitions, chroot to my old setup, this
would work also.

However a total hardware lock up would occur typically within about 2-3 mins.

I'm using only scsi hdd's, and there are onboard nics. The nics worked too.

It seemed a bit odd, and because of having to drop the power on the box
because of the hardware lock up I did end up with some corruption.

In the end the kernel which worked fine was the uni-proc, I tried a few other
combos, I think it was smp noacpi.

I don't remember having this problem with rc4.

So I'm not 100% sure if it's a fault with the smp kernel on 1.4 or if it was
due to my system being partly broken, but it might be worth having a look
into?

My hardware is:
tyan k7 thunder s2462ng
radeon 9k7 pro
some scsi hdds with reiser
2x mp2400+
512Mb ddr

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot off gentoo 1.4 cd & wait till prompt
2. select smp kernel wait till at bash
3. mount my hdds
4. chroot
5. use gentoo for upto a few mins
Actual Results:
hw will completely lock, typically during disk writing

Expected Results:

as stated I tried a few of the smp options but in the end the only stable
kernel for my setup seemed to be the uni proc, bit annoyed as it corrupted my
emerge - the fix seemed to be to delete /var/cache/edb &
/usr/portage/distfiles - then emerge started working without corrupting the
console font - so having to rebuild system, despite the fact everything is
there and working :/

Gentoo still rules :)

I should also mention that this was using a 1.4 xp compiled live/boot cd.
Also I got system hangs when attempting a completely fresh install. Again
the working solution I found was to use the uni proc core. Having got to
stage 3 and compiled my own smp kernel the system seems perfectly happy.
I'm not really a dev sort of chap, so can't offer a fix I'm afraid. Please
ask if you need anymore details etc

Cheers,

Guy

2.4.21 had some scsi/smp issues. this should be fixed
with newer kernels, and new cds when they arrive

I get the same problem with gentoo 1.4.

I'm using 2.4.20-gentoo-r8.

If there's a different kernel I should be using, how do I get it ?
Comment 4 Tim Yamin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-11-26 06:58:52 UTC
To get other kernels, just "emerge <something>-sources" : please see /usr/portage/sys-kernel for choices...

Have you tried a newer livecd to see if you still have problems?
Comment 6 Brian Jackson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-12-10 08:56:42 UTC
let me know if this is still a problem
Comment 7 ElGuido 2003-12-10 09:27:20 UTC
Hi,

I don't get any probs with home rolled 2.4 or 6 kernels, just the one off the offical 1.4 cd, which seemed odd as I had no issues with the rc's.

I tried a 2.6 livecd recently, 20031113 but had completely different problems (usb, apci etc etc) I'll try a 2.4 live cd soon and let you know how I get on, I have a job now, so that's 10hrs of my gentoo time down the pan!

Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
