Since gnome-control-center still needs HAL for correct device detection and gpointing-device-settings is already using devicekit, it should be possible to to use gpointing-device-settings with gnome-control-center istalled. Please fix.

the blocker is in gpointing-device-settings.
Comment 4 Peter Volkov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-12-08 18:19:50 UTC
blocker dropped but it will be good if gnome teams still reviews this change.

It was added because g-c-c has parts of the g-p-d's functionality:

http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gnome-control-center/commit/?id=e14a84a718d9882d320de1f359c0547836a9b4e3

and thus g-c-c-2.28 uses following gconf keys:
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/disable_while_typing (boolean)
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/tap_to_click (boolean)
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/horiz_scroll_enabled (boolean)
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/scroll_method (integer)

while g-p-d uses different keys.

I'm not sure if this is a problem, but probably either g-c-c or g-p-d will fail to disable touchpad if both are installed. But there are still some advantages of having both installed, thus blocker was dropped. So if somebody disagrees, please, reopen bug.
Comment 5 Angelo Arrifano (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-02-20 22:11:30 UTC
I just upgraded to gnome-2.28 and one of gnome-settings-daemon-2.28 or gnome-control-center-2.28 provides same functionality as gpointing-device-settings under mouse menu on gnome settings, as said above.

With the drop of package block, there might be a problem.. People that were using gpointing-device-settings and are upgrading to gnome-2.28 will have their touchpad settings under gpointing-device-settings overridden by new gnome-2.28 mouse settings, during session start. People unaware of this will be confused because clicking on gpointing-device-settings has immediate effect but those settings won't be preserved across sessions.

When writing the gnome-2.28 upgrade guide, please don't forget referring this.
