Description Paulo J. Matos 2009-11-02 14:01:02 UTC
After successful emerging nvidia-drivers, the driver nvidia.ko doesn't load with the error:
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.31-gentoo-r2/video/nvidia.ko): Invalid module format

My /usr/src/linux is pointing to the correct directory. The problem is found by looking into dmesg which states Module.symvers is missing.

Which means one of two things. Either nvidia-drivers shouldn't emerge successfully (and there should be a check there in the kernel sources which was forgotten) or if it emerges successfully, the driver should load successfully, right?

Please attach the relevant lines from dmesg, something like;
dmesg | tail -n 50 > dmesg-nvidia.txt
also attach the results after running nvidia-bug-report.sh
Comment 3 Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-11-06 14:46:31 UTC
Invalid module format from insmod can only happen in a few scenarios. You're kernel magic didn't match (i.e. you changed options between your running kernel and your kernel sources, you used a different compiler). You're kernel sources aren't pointing to your running kernel so the module was built against a different kernel.

David summed up exactly what information we need, please attach and re-open the issue.
Comment 4 Paulo J. Matos 2009-11-10 12:35:18 UTC
Rebuilding the kernel to generate Module.symvers and then emerging nvidia-drivers worked.
