fails to start, all i get when run in a terminal is:

It seems like you cannot connect to the server.
It is working here.
Maybe a tcpdump can help you analysing and fixing the problem.

One time it used to start after several minutes, but this last time i let it go all night and nothing.  I just tested on my ibook g4 and hearts also fails to start.  After a few minutes while responding to this, the screen flickered and i see an error.  (ill paste from that computer)

i tried running hearts with tcpdump listening, i didnt see anything come through.  then after a while i got some server time out and it started.  i tried again on my ibook and nothing shown on tcpdump, but after a while something flickered and went away.

how is this resolved ?  i have 2 different systems of different archs with what looks like the same problem.
