The cd kernel dies just after detecting all attached IDE devices. Here's the
kernel output visible by pressing F1 or F2.. (Please excuse any typos)

  ide1: BM-DMA ** snip **
ICH5-SATA: IDE controller at PCI slot 00:1f.2
ICH5-SATA: Chipset revision 2
ICH5-SATA: 100% native mode on irq 11

hdd: PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W5224A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hde: Maxtor 6Y120M0, ATA DISK drive

ide2 at 0xef88-0xef8f, 0xef86 on irq 11

----- HANGS ----

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Insert CD into DVD drive
2. Turn on power
3. Cry

Actual Results:
Hangs

Expected Results:
Should have booted into the installer I imagine.

I've tried all the kernel parameters I could think about...

I was able to resolve this problem by doing BIOS upgrade on my
Intel desktop board (I have D865PERL at work and it was brand new
but still contained relatively old BIOS!)

Upgraded BIOS is available at
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/support_intel.asp
(use search)

Now I can use official, released gentoo 2004.0 minimal live cd to
install my system!
