I've got the same problem. I'm using a Pentium D, booting from an AMD64 installation CD, trying to install a 32 bit gentoo kernel ( linux32 chroot )

I am trying to install Gentoo on an Intel Core2 Duo right now and it is hangng at Applying 4400_alpha-sysctl-uac.patch. I see in another virtual terminal that a rm process uses 100% CPU.
Well, let's see if the maintainers have an idea...
Can confirm bug, both 2.6.30-r8 and 2.6.31-r6.
I'm thinking about an eclass change that does not apply this for non alpha archs

Mike, I ran into this bug today. There is no .err file in /var/tmp/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r8/temp/. Using ext4 and just hangs at that point. * This profile has not been tested thoroughly and is not considered to be * a supported server profile at this time. Is anyone *not* using ext4 and experiencing this? Can someone run 'top' during this and tell me what state the rm process is in? does a ctrl-c kill the process? Anything in dmesg?
i've got the same problem both on ext3 and ext4 partitions. but it was my mistake - i've forgotten to do some things: mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc mount --bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev now it works fine.
If this is still a problem for people, respond to the questions from #14 and reopen. thanks.

It was chrooted incorrectly mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/proc Now when I have it corrected emerging gentoo-sources got success.
