Expected Results:
Installed gentoo-sources on /usr/src/

It's not always reproducible, users on #gentoo couldn't reproduce the error. However, corruption on the patches and the vanilla source were ruled out by a checksum.

Make sure the file system is not full and is ok.

>It's not always reproducible

Even for you? In this case it might be a hradware problem.
Comment 3 qdii 2009-11-28 20:22:41 UTC
I've got the same problem.
I'm using a Pentium D, booting from an AMD64 installation CD, trying to install a 32 bit gentoo kernel ( linux32 chroot )

I am trying to install Gentoo on an Intel Core2 Duo right now and it is hangng at Applying 4400_alpha-sysctl-uac.patch. I see in another virtual terminal that a rm process uses 100% CPU.
Comment 7 Sebastian Luther (few) 2009-12-12 08:30:20 UTC
Well, let's see if the maintainers have an idea...
Comment 8 Jens Björnhager 2009-12-16 07:33:44 UTC
Can confirm bug, both 2.6.30-r8 and 2.6.31-r6.
Comment 9 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2009-12-17 23:56:14 UTC
I'm thinking about an eclass change that does not apply this for non alpha archs

Patch for kernel-2.eclass

Can one of you please patch your kernel-2.eclass with this patch, test and report back here. Thanks.

I've got the same problem and the attached patch doesn't work for me.
Now, it get stalled just at the previous patch "Applying 4200_fbcondecor-0.9.6.patch".

Also, i can see a rm process with 100 % cpu usage.

Can I see someone's .err file?

As in "/var/tmp/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r8/temp/1000_linux-2.6.30.1.err"

Comment 13 Charles Hutson 2010-01-19 23:51:39 UTC
Mike,
I ran into this bug today. There is no .err file in /var/tmp/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r8/temp/. Using ext4 and just hangs at that point.

 * This profile is merely a convenience for people who require a more

Is anyone *not* using ext4 and experiencing this?

Can someone run 'top' during this and tell me what state the rm process is in?

does a ctrl-c kill the process? Anything in dmesg?

Comment 15 Alex Ermakov 2010-02-09 18:03:22 UTC
i've got the same problem both on ext3 and ext4 partitions. but it was my mistake - i've forgotten to do some things:

mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount --bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev

now it works fine.

If this is still a problem for people, respond to the questions from #14 and reopen. thanks.

I am.

4945 root 20 0 2228 760 476 R 97.5 0.0 9:11.72 rm

Ctrl^C does kill it. No dmesg footprint

Did you try comment #14? What does "mount | grep proc" say?
Is your environment chroot'ed?

My fault.
It was chrooted incorrectly

mount -o bind /dev /mnt/gentoo/proc

Now when I have it corrected emerging gentoo-sources got success.
