Which tex distibution are you using? The missing files are provided by app-text/texlive-core on my system.
Comment 3 Guido Winkelmann 2009-10-31 22:53:09 UTC
I'm using Texlive, though so far without the xml use-flag. That only got added after I switched to the new 10.0 profile.
Comment 4 Sebastian Luther (few) 2009-11-01 21:13:14 UTC
CCing tex@g.o

@tex guys: Any idea what that could be? There is a bug with the same error, but another package (bug 291395).
Comment 5 Guido Winkelmann 2009-11-03 14:46:28 UTC
This problem appears with a number of other ebuilds, gnuplot for example is affected as well.

The files in question are in fact present on my system, one in /usr/share/texmf/web2c/fmtutil.cnf (symlinked to /etc/texmf/web2c/fmtutil.cnf), the other in /usr/share/texmf/texconfig/tcfmgr.map, but that doesn't seem to help at all. Both these files do, in fact, belong to texlive-core. Remerging texlive-core doesn't help.

show 'texconfig conf' output
if you dont get TEXMFMAIN set to /usr/share/texmf then you should probably have a look at http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/tex/texlive-migration-guide.xml

Output of texconfig conf
Comment 8 Guido Winkelmann 2009-11-06 17:38:55 UTC
I have created a new attachment for the output of texconfig conf on my machine.

(By the way, is it normal for there to be that many warning messages in there?)

TEXMFMAIN /is/ set to /usr/share/texmf.

no its not;
what do you get when running 'mktexlsr' as root?

Seems you broke your ls-R files; this sounds like a fs corruption.

Try deleting those files:

and run mktexlsr again.

FYI - i had a very similar problem during a texlive update. I did not get the magic string messages but similar kpathsea errors. Deleting and recreating the files as suggested in comment #11 did work for me.
