Description Johannes Hirte 2009-10-26 17:40:16 UTC
With 'emerge -DNu world' portage doesn't catch all dependencies. Example:

emerge -pvDNu world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies ... done!
[ebuild U ] x11-terms/xterm-250 [249] USE="truetype unicode -Xaw3d -toolbar" 869 kB
[ebuild U ] net-ftp/proftpd-1.3.3_rc2 [1.3.3_rc1-r1] USE="acl authfile caps ctrls ipv6 ldap ncurses nls pam ssl tcpd -ban -case -clamav -deflate -doc -exec -hardened -ident -ifsession -kerberos -mysql -postgres -radius -ratio -readme -rewrite (-selinux) -sftp -shaper -sitemisc -softquota -trace -vroot -xinetd" 4,040 kB

Total: 2 packages (2 upgrades), Size of downloads: 4,908 kB

and

emerge -ep world | awk ' $2!="R" {print}'

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies ..... done!
[ebuild U ] x11-terms/xterm-250 [249]
[ebuild U ] dev-python/pycxx-6.1.1 [6.1.0]
[ebuild U ] net-ftp/proftpd-1.3.3_rc2 [1.3.3_rc1-r1]

I don't have other updates for the moment but it appears with other packages too.

Reproducible: Always

What gives "emerge -p --depclean" ?

What gives "emerge -DNu world --with-bdeps=y" ?
Comment 2 Johannes Hirte 2009-10-26 20:57:33 UTC
(In reply to comment #1)
> What gives "emerge -p --depclean" ?

emerge -p --depclean

 * Always study the list of packages to be cleaned for any obvious
 * mistakes. Packages that are part of the world set will always
 * be kept. They can be manually added to this set with
 * `emerge --noreplace <atom>`. Packages that are listed in
 * package.provided (see portage(5)) will be removed by
 * depclean, even if they are part of the world set.
 *
 * As a safety measure, depclean will not remove any packages
 * unless *all* required dependencies have been resolved. As a
 * consequence, it is often necessary to run `emerge --update
 * --newuse --deep @system @world` prior to depclean.

Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> No packages selected for removal by depclean
>>> To see reverse dependencies, use --verbose
Packages installed: 902
Packages in world: 156
Packages in system: 50
Required packages: 902
Number to remove: 0

> What gives "emerge -DNu world --with-bdeps=y" ?

emerge -pvDNu world --with-bdeps=y

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies ... done!

Ok, now its pulled in. It's a little irritating, since without some packages won't be updated over a long time. And it's also a little confusing to the --deep option.
Comment 3 Sebastian Luther (few) 2009-10-26 21:18:09 UTC
One can argue for both --mith-bdeps=y and =n. If you want y you could put it in your EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS.
