After an "emerge --emptytree" (which included emerging thunderbird), there are numerous ways thunderbird just hangs completely. Unfortunately, not any errors hinting to the source of the problem show up at all; especially none pointing ideas to _enigmail_ . Finally: Emerging enigmail (R) again afterwards solved the problem. On an emerge -e world enigmail gets merged after thunderbird for me. Never saw it reversed.
