While trying to get my usbdrive to automount I was wading through the usb-guide. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/usb-guide.xml 
At one point it says:
"(Enable this option to see your USB devices in /proc/bus/usb.
This is recommended.)
 [*]   USB device filesystem"

In the kernel it says 
USB device filesystem (DEPRECATED)
In the help, it says it has been replaced by real device-nodes managed by udev

I don't know what to do now since the gentoo guide doesn't talk about udev.
