Description Fabiano Francesconi 2009-10-23 12:18:02 UTC
I can't get the screen turning off after a time-period defined into gnome-power-manager preferences.

It worked only twice (in about a month, precisely, since stabilization of gnome-2.26).

I tried downgrading xorg, upgrading xorg but nothing helped.
Furthermore I tried upgrading g-p-m to 2.24.4-r2 but this didn't help at all.

Another thing I tried has been to change "/apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight/dpms_method_ac" and "/apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight/dpms_method_battery" to "off" instead of the default "default". As you probably image, this didn't help.

ATM my system is configured as follows:
- gnome-extra/gnome-power-manager-2.22.1
- x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.5

"/apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight/dpms_method_ac" = default
"/apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight/dpms_method_battery" = default

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Waiting 6 minutes for screensaver to start
2. See screen going blank instead of turning off

Actual Results:
The screen stays blank instead of turning off

Expected Results:
The screen should turn off

adding x11 to CC, they might have things to say.

The test to see who's to blame between X and g-p-m is simple, just run :

sleep 1 && xset dpms force off

If your monitor does turn off, then X is fine and g-p-m is to blame. I'd be willing to bet my lunch money that it's a g-p-m bug (like always ;)). Feel free to assign the bug back to us if needs be.

Thanks

g-p-m bug...

Besides waiting for 2.26 or even 2.28 to show up... I don't know. And honestly, the DPMS code in g-p-m freaks the hell out of me. It's somewhat better in 2.28 but it's a complete and utter mess in previous versions.

Now that we have xorg-server 1.6.5, maybe we could/should backport the DPMS code from 2.28? A task for Romain, maybe? IMO, it might not be worth the trouble, g-p-m is a mess...

Cheers

Nice.
So the official gnome power manager utility is a complete mess?
Nice. I think it needs to be rewritten then, or fixed.

The upstream git repo is here : http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gnome-power-manager

Feel free to send patches to upstream. There's only so much we can do as we're understaffed. Any help is most welcome.

Thanks

FTR I own a macbook 3.1 and g-p-m 2.26 worked just fine with xorg-server 1.6.5 before I switched to 2.28.
Comment 9 Fabiano Francesconi 2009-10-29 20:35:41 UTC
Installing gnome-extra/gnome-power-manager-2.26.4-r1 fix the issues.
Comment 10 Fabiano Francesconi 2009-10-29 22:25:39 UTC
Well.. fixes screen issues, yea.. but now my computer won't suspend anymore..
Comment 11 James C. Georgas 2010-01-05 17:22:56 UTC
Interestingly, the screen on my Inspiron 4100 turns off when I close the lid, even though it doesn't turn off via g-p-m. Also, when I open the lid again, the gnome screen lock has been engaged, so I guess gnome is getting some kind of signal from the lid switch.

This is really annoying, because I have to remember to close the lid whenever I walk away from my computer if I don't want to burn down the life on my backlight.
Comment 12 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-01-27 22:12:49 UTC
assuming fixed. If you still have problems with this, please report updated informations to relevant 2.26 or 2.28 ticket (something like bug #295227).
