I can't get the screen turning off after a time-period defined into gnome-power-manager preferences. It worked only twice (in about a month, precisely, since stabilization of gnome-2.26). I tried downgrading xorg, upgrading xorg but nothing helped. Furthermore I tried upgrading g-p-m to 2.24.4-r2 but this didn't help at all. Another thing I tried has been to change "/apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight/dpms_method_ac" and "/apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight/dpms_method_battery" to "off" instead of the default "default". As you probably image, this didn't help. ATM my system is configured as follows: - gnome-extra/gnome-power-manager-2.22.1 - x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.5 "/apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight/dpms_method_ac" = default "/apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight/dpms_method_battery" = default Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Waiting 6 minutes for screensaver to start 2. See screen going blank instead of turning off Actual Results: The screen stays blank instead of turning off Expected Results: The screen should turn off elbryan@whitebox ~ % emerge --info Portage 2.2_rc46 (default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop, gcc-4.3.4, glibc-2.9_p20081201-r2, 2.6.31-gentoo-r3 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: Linux-2.6.31-gentoo-r3-x86_64-Intel-R-_Core-TM-2_Duo_CPU_T7300_@_2.00GHz-with-gentoo-2.0.1 Timestamp of tree: Fri, 23 Oct 2009 10:00:01 +0000 app-shells/bash: 4.0_p28 dev-java/java-config: 2.1.8-r1 dev-lang/python: 2.6.2-r1 dev-util/cmake: 2.6.4 sys-apps/baselayout: 2.0.1 sys-apps/openrc: 0.5.2-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.6-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.63-r1 sys-devel/automake: 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.1 sys-devel/libtool: 2.2.6a virtual/os-headers: 2.6.27-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=core2 -mcx16 -msahf --param l1-cache-size=32 --param l1-cache-line-size=64 -mtune=core2 -O2" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo-release /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/sandbox.d /etc/terminfo /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=core2 -mcx16 -msahf --param l1-cache-size=32 --param l1-cache-line-size=64 -mtune=core2 -O2" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="assume-digests distlocks fixpackages news parallel-fetch preserve-libs protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-logs unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="gentoo.tiscali.nl" LANG="it_IT.UTF-8" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed" LINGUAS="it en" MAKEOPTS="-j4 -s" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT="/" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage/layman/sunrise /usr/local/portage/layman/gechi /usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X a52 aac acpi alsa amd64 bluetooth branding bzip2 cairo cdr cli consolekit cracklib crypt cups dbus dri dts dvd eds encode esd evo fam firefox flac gif gmail gnome gstreamer gtk hal hddtemp iconv imap java java6 jpeg laptop libnotify lm_sensors mad midi mikmod mmx mng modules mp3 mp4 mpeg msn mudflap multilib ncurses nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin ogg opengl openmp pam pdf png ppds pppd pulseaudio qt3support quicktime readline reflection samba sdl session sse sse2 ssl startup-notification svg sysfs tcpd threads thunar tiff truetype unicode usb vorbis wifi x264 xml xorg xulrunner xv xvid zlib zsh-completition" ALSA_CARDS="hda-intel" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse synaptics evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="it en" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="intel vesa" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LC_ALL, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
adding x11 to CC, they might have things to say.
The test to see who's to blame between X and g-p-m is simple, just run : sleep 1 && xset dpms force off If your monitor does turn off, then X is fine and g-p-m is to blame. I'd be willing to bet my lunch money that it's a g-p-m bug (like always ;)). Feel free to assign the bug back to us if needs be. Thanks
(bugzy bug, message didn't get throught) The test to see who's to blame between X and g-p-m is simple, just run : sleep 1 && xset dpms force off If your monitor does turn off, then X is fine and g-p-m is to blame. sleep 1 && xset dpms force off this command does turn off the monitor. Forgot to mention that I've a Macbook 4,1 What should I do next? :P
g-p-m bug... Besides waiting for 2.26 or even 2.28 to show up... I don't know. And honestly, the DPMS code in g-p-m freaks the hell out of me. It's somewhat better in 2.28 but it's a complete and utter mess in previous versions. Now that we have xorg-server 1.6.5, maybe we could/should backport the DPMS code from 2.28? A task for Romain, maybe? IMO, it might not be worth the trouble, g-p-m is a mess... Cheers

I think it needs to be rewritten then, or fixed.

The upstream git repo is here : http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gnome-power-manager Feel free to send patches to upstream. There's only so much we can do as we're understaffed. Any help is most welcome. Thanks
FTR I own a macbook 3.1 and g-p-m 2.26 worked just fine with xorg-server 1.6.5 before I switched to 2.28.
Installing gnome-extra/gnome-power-manager-2.26.4-r1 fix the issues.
Well.. fixes screen issues, yea.. but now my computer won't suspend anymore..
Interestingly, the screen on my Inspiron 4100 turns off when I close the lid, even though it doesn't turn off via g-p-m. Also, when I open the lid again, the gnome screen lock has been engaged, so I guess gnome is getting some kind of signal from the lid switch. This is really annoying, because I have to remember to close the lid whenever I walk away from my computer if I don't want to burn down the life on my backlight.
assuming fixed. If you still have problems with this, please report updated informations to relevant 2.26 or 2.28 ticket (something like bug #295227).
