Description Michael Mair-Keimberger (iamnr3) 2009-10-21 17:15:09 UTC
since a few weeks on boot and shutdown i always get this msg:
"/bin/sh: warning: setlocale: LC_ALL: cannot change locale (de_DE.UTF-8)"
more than 1times.
It seems this dosn't effect anything on the system.
i think utf-8 still works on the system. (how can i test, except with locale)
"locale" shows this:
LANG=
LC_CTYPE="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=de_DE.UTF-8

I've uploaded a bootlog for you with a few starts and stops.

As a side note:
I'm not sure but i think i have this messages since I've updated bash (to version 4).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

1. it's better to set only LANG, not LC_ALL
- but that's just a sidenote
2. is de_DE.UTF-8 (or de_DE.utf8) among 'locale -a' output ?

thanks for the info.. I'll change it in the next days :)

> 2. is de_DE.UTF-8 (or de_DE.utf8) among 'locale -a' output ?

yep, it is:
michael@asterix ~ $ locale -a
C
de_DE
de_DE@euro
de_DE.iso88591
de_DE.iso885915@euro
de_DE.utf8
deutsch
german
POSIX

Comment 4 Peter Alfredsen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-10-23 13:01:24 UTC
have you tried setting the locale to de_DE.utf8 ? Perhaps it makes a difference. My locale is set to :
loki elfutils # cat /etc/env.d/02locale
LANG="en_US.utf8"
LC_ALL="en_US.utf8"

For example.

Wow, it seems it really makes a difference. Actually your solution worked. Thanks for the hint. This bug can be closed now..
Comment 6 Zorzo Luca 2009-10-24 09:09:57 UTC
Today i noticed the same problem. Everything else is working right with ".utf8" instead of ".UTF-8"?
For example my language is italian and i'm using it_IT:
- locale-gen writes: "Generating it_IT.UTF-8..."
but
- locale -a : "it_IT.utf8".

So are they really the same except for this sh warning?
Is it better UTF-8 or utf8?
Gentoo's handbook and various guides suggest UTF-8, but if utf8 is a better choice we should change at least the handbook.
