Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-10-21 10:42:32 UTC
This is really an upstream bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/hplip/+bug/335662

that I am suffering since months without reply from upstream :-(

The problem is that, when gnome login takes some time (for example, just after rebooting), I usually get:
"No system tray detected on this system. Unable to start, exiting".

There are some workarounds being applied by debian and mandriva:
http://patch-tracker.debian.org/patch/series/view/hplip/3.9.8-1/delayed-hp-systray-start.dpatch

but they look a bit dirty :-/

The problem is at the end of ui4/systemtray.py:
def run(read_pipe):
    log.set_module("hp-systray(qt4)")
    log.debug("PID=%d" % os.getpid())

    app = SystemTrayApp(sys.argv, read_pipe)
    app.setQuitOnLastWindowClosed(False) # If not set, settings dlg closes app

    i = 0
    while i < 60:
        if QSystemTrayIcon.isSystemTrayAvailable():
            break
        time.sleep(1.0)
        i += 1

    if not QSystemTrayIcon.isSystemTrayAvailable():
        FailureUI(None,
            QApplication.translate("SystemTray",
            "<b>No system tray detected on this system.</b><p>Unable to start, exiting.</p>",
            None, QApplication.UnicodeUTF8),
            QApplication.translate("SystemTray", "HPLIP Status Service",
            None, QApplication.UnicodeUTF8))
    else:
        notifier = QSocketNotifier(read_pipe, QSocketNotifier.Read)
        QObject.connect(notifier, SIGNAL("activated(int)"), app.notifierActivated)

        app.exec_()

I have tried to modify
while i < 10:

to "60" instead of "10" without success, I have also tried to change time.sleep from 1.0 to 30.0, and also failed.

My emerge --info:

Then, seems that finally the bug was here, but a even longer time was needed. I have just applied the change for testing in next days
Comment 3 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2010-01-02 15:14:55 UTC
Do you let me commit this? I hit this problem every day without it, and I am suffering this since months

Thanks

Feel free to commit the patch, but please do as I did for the other patches and mention the upstream bug in the ebuild. Example below:

	# Description
	# Upstream bug: $URI
	epatch "${FILESDIR}"/$PATCH

Done, thanks :-)
