In the init file /etc/init.d/hdapsd the line #15 reads: if [ ! -f /dev/${DISK} ]; then and I think this is usually evaluated to be wrong, because ${DISK} is something like sda, but /dev/sda is not a regular file (man test). I think it should read: if [ ! -e /dev/${DISK} ]; then or maybe even -c.
