Description Tomáš Chvátal (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-10-16 10:44:22 UTC
All packages using this deprecated build system should be checked if they dont have alternative build system, rewritten to new one if really required or treecleaned (if they have nicer alternatives).

This buildsystem is used in packages which have creation date around 1996. If you find package using it as its dep or requiring it please create separate bug and block this one.

This is a tracker bug so usually create new bugs instead of commenting here.

Recomended build systems for rewriting:
autotools
cmake
Definitely not recomended ones for rewriting:
scons

I think we can treeclean x11-misc/xse. It's an old X utility that has not been converted to autotools when the rest of Xorg did. IMHO, it's dead.

Until there are real bugs in imake what is the profit in fixing this bug? Transfig upstream has no interest if _we_ update build system for them and I'm not happy to maintain separate patch for that nice package...

Upstream doesn't *have* to do it if they don't want to, we won't remove their package (at least soon, since imake doesn't have any bugs in our bugzilla).

The point of the bug is to make all of us realize that imake is a dead project and depending on it is a liability. It may not be a problem now, or ever, but it *could* become a real problem someday. So, the sooner people stop relying on it, the better for them.

Cheers

Quite a number of packages still depending on imake:

As I wrote in comment #2 some packages will continue using it, so why this bug? Let's close it.
Comment 6 Matt Turner gentoo-dev 2011-08-03 13:28:32 UTC
Yeah, I don't think imake is going away anytime soon, unfortunately.

Going to close as CANTFIX. :(
