Description brad 2009-10-16 10:44:00 UTC
Following the gentoo handbook raid installation. The first thing I noticed is that stage3 builds were no longer available, so I chose the only stage3 available which was hardened. Continued with the installation as normal and when I got to grub, it failed. Tried to mask and unmak various version, safe failure. Tried to update system, the final update was gcc, this failed as well.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge various version of grub
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Same failure

FYI, I had build the none stage3 before with little to no problem on the system before. like earlier this evening. Had to redo it because I missed something. The bug or any problems did not occur until the normal stage3s where no longer available.
Volume groups were completely deleted and reinstalled error free and this problem still happens.

There are different weekly build dates, the standard stage3's are available:
http://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/

I suspect you were looking here:
http://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/20091015/
Which the only current builds there are hardened+nomultilib.

If you go here:
http://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/20091008/
You'll find ALL available amd64 stage3's.

afaict you used a hardened+nomultilib stage3 to install and have switched to a non-hardened, multilib standard gentoo profile. The multilib switch is the part that's tripping you up.

Prior to your reply, I hunted down an older stage three and reinstalled with an older stage 3 and system works fine.
