Please try to reemerge with an more uptodate compiler. >gcc-4
Maybe add a dependency on minimum gcc version and on-the-fly change, or so? See: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Compiler_versions_used_by_port_maintainers_and_release_engineers The release engineers use GCC 4.2.3 for x86-based platforms, e.g. ;)
Is there a way to build openoffice with gcc-4 without rebuilding my entire system? For the next month or so I'm stuck with some other software that isn't very compatible with gcc-4.
emerge it, select it, emerge openoffice.
And btw, normally if toolchains are marked stable neraly 100% of all packages are tested to compile with it. So you can upgrade w/o fear.
I was under the impression that it was likely that applications compiled with gcc-X will fail to link against libraries compiled with gcc-Y, if X and Y are substantially different. I'll give it a go, anyway. The other software I need is not under portage control, and doesn't work very well (in some modes, at least) with gcc-4.

Here is the upgrade guide: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml
> Of course you are right! > Here is the upgrade guide: > http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml > Ah, yes, I'm aware of the upgrade guide. I wanted to know if there was a way to test building openoffice with gcc-4 without first rebuilding my entire system, as I'd then have to rebuild it back again with gcc-3, and I really can't spare the time for such a massive operation until after my Honours project is complete (which is what makes me dependent on software that doesn't work with gcc-4, anyway, so after that I'll just upgrade back again). If there's no way to resolve this issue without switching my system compiler to gcc-4, then I'll just have to live without openoffice for now.
