The fstab.5 manpage refers to dump column in /etc/fstab files. The information is quite sparse and one is probably ought to inspect dump.8 manpage mentione din the text. But, it is not installed. # equery belongs fstab * Searching for fstab ... sys-apps/baselayout-2.0.1 (/usr/share/baselayout/fstab) [cut] # emerge -pv man-pages These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! Currently, Handbook (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=8) says: <quote> The fifth field is used by dump to determine if the partition needs to be dumped or not. You can generally leave this as 0 (zero). [cut] Code Listing 1.3: A full /etc/fstab example /dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults, noatime 1 2 </quote> So why do you suggest users to set dump to 1?
dump(8) is provided by the dump utility. if you dont have the utility installed, you dont have the man page installed, and the 5th field is completely irrelevant.
