Description PM 2009-09-30 20:44:08 UTC
The last time I was able to print something was a few weeks ago, I think. Now when trying to print something, I get "Przetwarzanie - "/usr/libexec/cups/backend/hp failed"" in cups' http interface and in system log something like this:

Then a process called for example "Photosmart_C5100 30 anonymous Test Page 1 job-uuid=urn:uuid:a1900f8e-bf56-3377-7c2f-9bad14345ecd job-originating-host-name=localhost" starts eating up a whole processor core.

It's also worth noting that i connect the printer via ethernet connection and that I can still install the printer using hp-setup (so it's visible on the network).

net-print/cups-1.4.1, net-print/hplip-3.9.8

Reproducible: Always

I'm encountering the same thing, with hplip-3.9.8 and cups-1.3.1-r2 (also tested to the same result with cups-1.4.1).

I've been running hplip-3.9.8 from the testing ebuild for several weeks, and the problem only arose as of the last day or two when I ran a big upgrade. It included the new cups, but since downgrading didn't fix it, I wonder if it is the new hal or something like that?
Comment 2 ziggysquatch 2009-10-09 15:37:08 UTC
Any news on this? I have the same issue with cups 1.4.1 and hplip 3.9.8.

I disabled USB Printer support in the kernel too.

Can you please try with hplip-3.9.8-r2.

Did you run hp-setup after installing the new version? There are some changes regarding network printers in hplip-3.9.8. Maybe reconfiguring hplip works.

From the hplip release notes:

Enable mDNS as the default network search mechanism
Added front-end support for mDNS/Bonjour

I did. However now that you mentioned it, I did it again, but I changed network discovery method from "mDNS/Bonjour" to "SLP" - and it worked ;]

Do you have cups build with the zeroconf use flag? If not can you please do me a favour and build it with zeroconf. Then check if mDNS/Bonjour works with this configuration.
Comment 8 PM 2009-10-15 10:54:24 UTC
Yes, after building cups with zeroconf flag it works nicely with mDNS/Bonjour.

Thanks for reporting this bug and your help. Now I need to fix this in the ebuild.
Comment 10 Daniel Pielmeier gentoo-dev 2009-10-15 18:51:15 UTC
Fixed in hplip-3.9.8-r3.

Hi all. I am afraid that the bug seems to be back, I have the same printer as the OP, same setup, and I had to use the SLP workaround to get a connection to the printer. This is on cups-1.4.4-r2 and hplip-3.10.6. (with no zeroconf flag to be seen either)

zeroconf is not supported by hplip and cups-1.4, so you have to use SLP.

In that case, any way of disabling the mDNS in hplip, considering it is both default and not working?

No idea, I do not own a networked printer. I don't see why this is a problem. You only need it for setting up the printer don't you. Afaik with hp-setup you can choose using mdns or slp to configure your printer.

Yeah, that's correct. I am just saying that the average user will go with the default, and then randomly find his printer is not working and be rather puzzled like I was, so if there was a way of forcing the default to be what actually works, that would be good. :)
