This is what happens when the emerge process of xfree-4.3.0-r3 fails on my machine:

Could you paste the output of emerge info please? Also the output of patch --version? Works here..

Hello

Found the problem. I had patch version 2.5.4. After upgrading to 2.5.9 everything worked. Strange.

No, patch 2.5.9 is not marked as a dependency. I move to reopen.
