Portion of output from 'eix openoffice' (to demonstrate what other USE flags might have had a possible influence on the compilation).

Problem appears if and only if 'nsplugin' is present in USE. Several combinations of USE flags have been tried, including "-* nsplugin" and "-* and "-nsplugin". Problem appears to be isolated with the nsplugin USE flag. Thus,
  echo "app-office/openoffice -nsplugin" >> /etc/portage/package.use && emerge -vD openoffice
will allow it to compile correctly, and is a valid workaround.

Sorry, I'm in the middle of moving halfway across the world (from USA to Japan), and am currently without a reliable internet connection. I'll reopen this report when I get a chance, which might take a week or two.
