"-K" means "use a binary package, regardless of version". "-k" means "use a binary package if there is one for the version you requested". In case of "-K", people not using GRP won't be able to emerge genkernel :( The "-k" is correct since it suits both camps. What you are referring too is a bug with the LiveCD in which the binary package of genkernel was wrong. This has been fixed in newer LiveCD versions though.
