Description Robert Forsman 2009-09-14 22:02:22 UTC
I upgraded to xorg-server 1.5 and now the touchpad on my laptop is entirely too sensitive.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. use your finger to position the cursor on a button
2. lift up your finger
3. watch the mouse move off the button
4. kick the dog

Expected Results:
The cursor should not be moving anywhere near that fast. Under xorg 1.3 the touchpad was usable, but it is so sensitive in 1.5 that I can not use it. I can traverse the entire screen by moving my finger 1/2 across the touchpad.

I attached a USB mouse and its behavior seems to be fine. Only the touchpad (which is the only thing I have available most of the time) is crazy.

I'm going to mark this as "major" since it really buggers my laptop. People with normal mice probably won't care so you might disagree about the severity.

I'm betting on INVALID.

1. mouse!=touchpad
2. did you configure things correctly
and are using synaptics driver (if you didn't,
you may be using evdev driver for touchpad too)
3. defaults for the driver have changed, too
(read the manpage)

I found that re-emerging xf86-input-synaptics with USE=hal drastically reduced my touchpad speed. I was able to tune it closer to the speeds I remember using synclient. I'm not sure how to make HAL load the latest edits I made to my local hal/fdi/policy/ XML, and I'm not willing to reboot, so I'll just wait until my next natural reboot to see if I have persisted the settings properly.

Hopefully this bug report has the right keywords so that the next person who has this problem can benefit from my solution.
