Description Andy Ashley 2009-09-09 17:39:58 UTC
We experienced a hardware failure on this machine today and it appears to be unrecoverable. This means the qubenet.net UK Gentoo mirror service is totally off line at present.

We are currently building a replacement virtual machine on our VMWare ESX platform (a project we had scheduled anyway as this machine was old, but are now forced to hurry up)

This will however mean that the old IP address it was using will change, current it is:

# host mirror.qubenet.net
mirror.qubenet.net has address 81.19.51.238
mirror.qubenet.net has IPv6 address 2a01:90::2120

Any DNS, ACL's, etc will need to be adjusted to the new server IP:

81.91.243.120

I'm planning to have the machine back online and fully synced by close of business tomorrow (18:00 GMT+1 10 Sept 2009)

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Regards,
Andy Ashley

Reproducible: Always

Update: 15:30 GMT+1 11 Sept 2009

The mirror has been rebuilt and synced.

Good news is now it's really a full mirror with experimental, etc and more space on a faster machine.

I am however unable to re-sync the gentoo-portage portion of the mirror as no one has responded to my request to update the IP on the Gentoo systems to allow connections from the machine.

New IP: 81.91.243.120

Could someone have a look please?

Regards,
Andy.

I've added 81.91.243.120 to the ACL quickly for you so that you can sync, but I'm waiting for mirror admins to update the rest of the records for you.

The DNS is still pointing to the old IP.

$ host rsync.uk.gentoo.org
rsync.uk.gentoo.org has address 80.68.87.200
rsync.uk.gentoo.org has address 81.19.51.238 <---- Wrong

Could this be updated ASAP please to: 81.91.243.120
This is causing problems for users trying to sync.

Thanks.

Just to second what Andy is saying this is causing big problems for users of rsync.uk.gentoo.org as there are only two servers in the rotation so it's 50/50 if you get a working one. Could we please get the correct A record in rsync.uk.gentoo.org?

Hey, your request is being heard. The mirror-admin team is understaffed and I am being trained to help out. Thanks for understanding.

I updated rsync1.uk, rsync.uk, and rsync.europe to include your new IP. I'm putting it in the test system for one week just to make sure it looks good.

Andy,
Your gentoo-portage mirror is lagging by ~40 minutes. At what intervals are you syncing it?
Comment 8 Andy Ashley 2009-10-05 10:08:00 UTC
(In reply to comment #7)

Hi,

Every 30 mins:

#gentoo.org full distribution mirror files:
  0     */4      *       *       *       /bin/sh /etc/rsync/rsync-gentoo.org.sh >/dev/null 1>/dev/null

#gentoo.org portage mirror files:
 */30    *       *       *       *       /bin/sh /etc/rsync/rsync-gentoo-portage.sh >/dev/null 1>/dev/null

I have noticed though that every so often (quite rarely) the machine fails to contact the rsync server (unreachable) which I put down to intermittent connectivity issues between here and the US. Seems quite unlikely that you happened to test just after one of these update failures occurred but I guess it's possible.

Could you try again and see if there is any difference please?

Regards,
Andy.

rsync1.us.g.o, despite having .us. in the name, is actually in the UK presently.
It's merely convention for old mirrors that the old DNS still works.

Andy, at 15:36 UTC, your mirror was in sync. I will check again at the top of an hour and report back.

Closing now. Please open a new ticket if there are any future problems. Thanks for supporting Gentoo.
