Replaces “Mozilla Firefox” and “Firefox” to “Iceweasel” in an already installed language pack, with results similar to what Debian does for their iceweasel-i10n-* packages. (ff-iw.sh,787 bytes, text/plain)

Description Raffaello D. Di Napoli 2009-08-30 15:03:31 UTC
Hi everybody.
I believe I found an incoherency which seems to have gone unnoticed, about Iceweasel.
I emerged www-client/mozilla-firefox with USE=iceweasel and LINGUAS=it in my make.conf. So, after a somewhat long build (I know, I know, the handbook suggests using the -bin ebuild, but I only do that with openoffice), I got my Iceweasel ready.

When launched, though, the title bar displayed “Mozilla Firefox”; it took me a while to figure I could try disabling the selected (Italian) language pack. After doing so and restarting it, the UI of course turned English, but the title bar correctly read “Iceweasel”.

Since I know the Iceweasel I’m talking about is from Debian, I went on their web site and downloaded the latest stable language pack for Iceweasel (found using http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=iceweasel), which turned out to properly contain “Iceweasel” in the (few) places where “Firefox” or “Mozilla Firefox” would otherwise be.

So I looked at the mozilla-firefox ebuild, and turns out it completely disregards USE=iceweasel when looking for language packs; that is, it just downloads the official ones (from “http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/${PV}/linux-i686/xpi/${X}.xpi”), saves them as “${P}-${X}.xpi”, and then installs the .xpi files. This way the Iceweasel branding is completely lost, except for the icons and the GNOME menu entry.

I then compared the installed language pack with the one from Debian (which worked perfectly, but was one sub version behind - 3.0.12 vs. 3.0.13); the differences were so minimal that I decided to build myself a script to apply the changes to an already-installed official language pack.

Now, while this works, I have two questions:

* Is this important enough for the www-client/mozilla-firefox maintainers to care and integrate the script as part of a post-build emerge step?

* How come no one noticed/complained before? Is it because everyone just installs mozilla-firefox-bin (which doesn’t offer USE=iceweasel)? Or is it just that no one bothers to add USE=iceweasel? (Which actually on Gentoo isn’t necessary at all, being a source-based distribution.)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. LINGUAS=<any non-English> USE=iceweasel emerge www-client/mozilla-firefox
2. Run firefox (Iceweasel), notice “Mozilla Firefox” in the title bar.
3. Tools » Plugins » Languages » Disable (all of them), restart when prompted.
4. Notice “Iceweasel” in the title bar (and the English UI).

Actual Results:
Localization per LINGUAS doesn‘t take USE=iceweasel into account.

Expected Results:
USE=iceweasel honored whether or not using language packs from LINGUAS.

The Firefox ebuild is www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.0.13; however I’m quite confident this has happened with any past ebuild. I did not try with unstable versions.

Replaces “Mozilla Firefox” and “Firefox” to “Iceweasel” in an already installed language pack, with results similar to what Debian does for their iceweasel-i10n-* packages.

This script can easily be run by the ebuild post-build step, once for each language pack, after cd’ing into each pack’s chrome directory.
Comment 2 Jory A. Pratt gentoo-dev 2009-09-26 04:08:01 UTC
Icecat is in the mozilla overlay, please test with it, it has support to rename the language packs and will be used to replace iceweasel useflag here in next few days.
Comment 3 Jory A. Pratt gentoo-dev 2009-10-25 16:38:01 UTC
Iceweasel useflag has been drop, in favor of icecat. It is already in the tree and will propogate to the mirrors shortly.
