Description Juergen Rose 2009-08-07 18:23:08 UTC
I had no problems with the gentoo-sources-2.6.29-r* kernels. Since using the gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r* kernels I have often some problems mainly with the acpi and powermanagent respectively. I.e., If I close the lid with running linux, the system is not going to the suspend state. Or the system does not shutdown correctly. I have to use the main switch. Sometimes I can't start powertop, it hangs. Sometimes 'cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor' hangs.
'modprobe kvm_intel' fails.

I find in /var/log/kern.log I find:

Comment 1 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2009-08-09 23:07:18 UTC
Can you get the oops in vanilla-sources-2.6.30.4 and post the complete dmesg
Comment 2 Juergen Rose 2009-08-11 21:19:11 UTC
With vanilla-sources-2.6.30.4 I get a similar behaviour like with gentoo-sources.
I can't do modprobe kvm_intel:
modprobe kvm_intel
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/kqemu, it will be ignored in a future release.
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia, it will be ignored in a future release.
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/lirc, it will be ignored in a future release.
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.30.4/kvm/kvm.ko
WARNING: Error inserting kvm (/lib/modules/2.6.30.4/kvm/kvm.ko): Invalid argument
FATAL: Error inserting kvm_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.30.4/kernel/arch/x86/kvm/kvm-intel.ko): Invalid argument

Sometimes I can't shutdown the systems. The computer does not go to suspend mode when the lid is closed. I get the warning about the hotkey
If I press Fn-F4 the system goes to the suspend mode.

With gentoo-sources-2.6.29-gentoo-r5 I have no warnings about hotkey, I can load kvm_intel and the system goes to the suspend mode if the lid is closed.

Is this related with bug #279588 you've already reported?

Do these problems occur with 2.6.30 kernels + nvidia-drivers-185.18.14?
Comment 4 Juergen Rose 2009-08-17 15:38:10 UTC
Yes, it occurs with 2.6.30 kernels + nvidia-drivers-185.18.14.

But I suppose that it is not related with Bug #279588, because Bug #279588 happens with nvidia-drivers-185.18.{29,31}. After downgrading to nvidia-drivers-185.18.14 the problem disapeared, at least for linux-2.6.29-gentoo.

I just tested 2.6.30-gentoo-r5 but it seems to be unchanged: Warning about hotkey, I can't load kvm_intel, hanging during shutdown.
Comment 5 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2009-08-30 20:05:01 UTC
Please test with the latest development kernel version which is git-sources-2.6.31_rc8-r1 as of this writing.

If the error persists, please post this bug upstream at http://bugzilla.kernel.org and post the link back here.
