Description Juergen Rose 2009-08-07 11:10:01 UTC
If I call gnome-about with or without options from the command prompt, it returns
1 to the shell. E.g.:
GNOME gnome-about 2.26.3
root@lynx:/root(6)# echo $?
1
root@lynx:/root(7)# gnome-about --gnome-version
Version: 2.26.3
Distributor: Gentoo
Build Date: 07/11/09
root@lynx:/root(8)# echo $?
1

This seems to be a new behaviour with gnome-desktop-2.26.3, because my .bash_profile calls 'gnome-about --gnome-version' and now complains about the return state.

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-08-08 21:09:20 UTC
eva@keitaro ~ $ gnome-about --gnome-version
Version : 2.26.3
Distributeur : Gentoo
Date de construction : 17/07/2009
eva@keitaro ~ $ echo $?
0

same as root, and it will complain if it can't access X as well.

emerge --info and you probably want to strace gnome-about, maybe it'll show something interesting.
Comment 2 Juergen Rose 2009-08-08 22:12:48 UTC
The problem happens on two systems, at all other computes gnome-about returns 0:

Also after a fresh emerge of gnome-desktop returns 'gnome-about --gnome-version' 1.
Comment 6 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-08-08 22:22:43 UTC
could you try running gnome-about under gdb ?
Comment 7 Juergen Rose 2009-08-09 06:14:48 UTC
Can you give me a hint, how to run gnome-about under gdb?

it is indeed a python script. You might want to rebuild python, pygobject and pygtk with debugging symbols to start with until you get a backtrace with no "no symbols available". See [1].

Comment 10 Juergen Rose 2009-08-17 13:41:33 UTC
I modified my CFLAGS to:

root@lynx:/root(31)# grep CFLAGS /etc/make.conf
CFLAGS="-march=nocona -O2 -ggdb"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
FFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

Then I reemerge some packages:

root@lynx:/root(33)# history | grep emerge
...
 1009  emerge -vD1 =python-2.6.2-r1
 1011  emerge -v1 pygobject pygtk
 1018  emerge -vD1 gnome-desktop
 1025  emerge -vD1 libgnome-python libgnome
 1029  emerge -vD gtk+

But if I do:
gdb python
(gdb) run /usr/bin/gnome-about --gnome-version

I don't see more debugging information, than described in Comment #8.
What I am doing wrong? Should I reemerge more packages with the ggdb FLAG?

Comment 11 Rémi Cardona (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-08-17 15:30:27 UTC
You're probably missing FEATURES="splitdebug"
