it is indeed a python script. You might want to rebuild python, pygobject and pygtk with debugging symbols to start with until you get a backtrace with no "no symbols available". See [1]. [1] http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml

This shouldn't be a problem with gnome-desktop-2.28 since gnome-about was ported to not use libgnome-python, could you try that and verify that it works?
