It is possible that the error is because of x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r3, however 
app-office/gnucash-1.8.5 crashes during startup with the following errors 
(1.8.4 worked fine though):

I backported to stable x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r2 and gnucash was able to open, so it must be an xfree issue.

xfree guys? is there any reason why 4.3.0-r3 might not install adobe helvetica? i'm inclined to think it might be a local problem

my 4.3.0-r3 installs the adobe helvetica font:

although possible that it may be a local problem, when I backported to the 
stable xfree gnucash worked. This would leave me to assume that the adobe 
helvetica compiled properly in stable xfree.

i can't reproduce this at all, and no one else seems to be able either. i'm
closing this unless either someone else can reproduce this or a solution
pops up.

I just moved from xfree to xorg-x11-6.7.0 and encountered the same problem.

my LANG is en_AU.UTF-8.
