=media-sound/audacious-2.1 doesn't show anything but english characters in id3 tags. This was not a problem in audacious-2.0.1. This looks like a regression. Uh, I already tested with that use flag. That didn't work either.
Also I did not have chardet use flag enabled for 2.0.1 and it worked in that situation.

Does sound like a regression.. could you post the build log from when you built audacious? Bonus point for also attaching the log from the audacious version that correctly shows utf-8 ;)
Ok apparently there isn't anything wrong. I am able to see non-english characters again instead of question marks with 2.1 now. I solved the problem by removing the entire play list and reloading the play list from my xspf file. It seems to work now. Something must have been interfering with the play list after I upgraded audacious. It was quite persistent since it was a problem even after reboot but now appears to be ok.
