What happens if you change -O3 to -O2 in your falgs and uses MAKEOPTS="-j1"?

No difference, same error.  I am attaching a build log from the build with -O2 and -j1 buildopts.

I found the problem. Should be fixed in -r1.

Out of curiosity, was it the same issue as the cause to bug #282228?  I understand why you would want to have both debug & release versions of the same library on your machine, but GTK's naming conventions for this (or the way the build was discovering the paths) seemed to be what was mucking it up.

No it wasn't. The problem reported in bug 282228, was about the wrapper which you are using to run 7z. This one was, because the package has hardcoded the path to the headers in one of the makefiles. This fails in case of of a place change, which occurs with USE="debug" for wxGTk e.g..
