Please stabilize this on your arch. You will need a sound card to test this; here is a quick test. 1) emerge espeakup 2) modprobe speakup_soft 3) /etc/init.d/espeakup start At this point, your system should start speaking and speak whatever is happening on the text based console (not in X), and whatever you type. You can stop it by first stopping the daemon then do a modprobe -r speakup_soft to unload the module.
