SILC [Client|Server|Toolkit] v0.9 came out last night. Yeah, that's nice. However, protocol changes from 0.8.6 [and certainly 0.7.6.2, the version in the Portage tree] make it impossible to connect to the SILC servers now. This basically means that SILC is useless in the mainline, unless you're running your own server. It would be nice to be able to connect to the primary SILCnet again without resorting to such drastic tactics as installing a tarball. -shiver-
I just tried hacking an ebuild that would upgrade this, by basically editing the ebuild already in the portage tree. However, nowadays irssi uses perlstuff, and it wants to write in the perl library directories. The SILC client is based on irssi, so now it violates the sanctity of the sandbox. Argh. My ebuild-fu is definitely too low to figure this one out at the moment.
See bug 2815 for an attempt at an ebuild for this.
FIXED now that 2815 is committed.
