Actually, I can't begin to phantom how this can be happening unless you got a broken tarball. ~/tmp $ ls openmpi-1.2.9/opal/etc/ Makefile.am Makefile.in openmpi-mca-params.conf The above is from a clean extracted tarball, and the Makefile does nothing but install that file. Can you verify your portage_tmpdir isn't having issues and that you did get the correct distfile?

Tarball is ok (checksums are the same as in Manifest) and contains the file openmpi-1.2.9/opal/etc/openmpi-mca-params.conf. I've had a quick look at /var/tmp/portage/sys-cluster/openmpi-1.2.9/work/openmpi-1.2.9/opal/etc and there the file was missing. Then I simply retried and it worked. I've no clue why it failed first, but anyway, forget about it.
