Octave-3.2.0 has splitted some of its code into separate project called qrupdate (http://sourceforge.net/projects/qrupdate/), but the ebuild doesn't favor this change. Octave may be build dependent of sci-libs/arpack but this is not reflected in the octave's USE flags and the presence of sci-libs/arpack is detected during the configuration phase of octave. Octave-3.0.2 features some native graphics (as opposed to calls to gnuplot). This introduces new dependencies: media-libs/ftgl and x11-libs/fltk and possible others. This is not reflected in the ebuild. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: emerge octave Actual Results: configure: WARNING: qrupdate not found. Hi Alexander, Thank you very much for your detailed report. I am aware of most of these issues but it'll take some time until everything is in place. Regarding arpack, I've just disabled it in the ebuild and prevented octave from linking against the lib. We will have to wait until arpack is keyworded on all relevant arches (currently only amd64 and x86) before we can make it a dependency. Regarding qrupdate: This is currently lacking from the portage tree. It would be great if you could file a package request bug for it possibly even with a working ebuild so we can get it into the tree asap. Regarding the new fltk graphics: I haven't had time to look at this yet. Unfortunately, octave's configure doesn't currently allow to disable linking against fltk (maybe I am wrong?) and I am not ready yet to make fltk a hard dependency for octave. cheers, Markus
You should add bug 277805 as dependency. Just created bug 282203 for qrupdate
Thanks! Hopefully I'll have a chance to take a look at qrupdate soon. Any ebuild suggestions are welcome ;) cheers, Markus

Ok, I mostly tracked down the deps. A corresponding ebuild is in my overlay. @markusle: we might want to patch the configure.in a little to add an option to disable the "native graphics" since depending unconditionally on fltk[opengl] (and other stuff) may make people unhappy.

Once this is done we can add them to the current ebuild. Regarding fltk I agree that if we enable it we should to it conditionally. I've briefly tried the fltk gui and didn't find it all that useful yet (compared to gnuplot) so we might want to wait a few revision before enabling it; not sure. Thanks, Markus
arpack has been added to octave-3.2.* after keywording on all arches. Best, Markus
I added graphicsmagick, ftgl, fltk in a science overlay ebuild. Please test. It won't hit the main tree until we have arches keywording required deps.
all of these fixed in 3.2.4-r1.
