Description Willard Dawson 2009-07-06 04:00:40 UTC
I followed the how-to in the Gentoo Handbook on Wireless Networking. I have successfully configured this on prior installations on the same system hardware - Dell Latitude D610 with ipw2200 using wpa_supplicant.

/etc/conf.d/net:

config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
modules=( "wpa_supplicant" )

I have uninstalled wireless-tools to prevent any confusion. When I run `/etc/init.d/net.eth1 start`, the result:

# /etc/init.d/net.eth1 start
* Bringing up interface eth1
* No configuration specified; defaulting to DHCP
*   dhcp...
*     Running dhcpcd...
eth1: dhcpcd 4.0.13 starting
eth1: waiting for carrier

/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf:

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=wheel
ap_scan=2
network={
        ssid="MyESSID"
        scan_ssid=1
        proto=WPA2
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
        pairwise=CCMP TKIP
        group=CCMP TKIP WEP104 WEP40
        psk=.........
        priority=2
}

When I execute it from the command line, e.g.,

wpa_supplicant -dd -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -ieth1 -Dwext

...and then run `dhcpcd eth1` from another shell, the connection is established, and an IP address is obtained.

Any suggestions on how to debug and resolve this would be greatly appreciated!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.merge net-wireless/wpa_supplicant, net-wireless/ipw2200-firmware
2.actually try to use it
3.

Actual Results:
/etc/init.d/net.eth1 won't use wpa_supplicant

Expected Results:
/etc/init.d/net.eth1 will use wpa_supplicant

Uhm, you're trying to start an interface which you haven't configured in /etc/conf.d/net ... ? config_eth0, shouldn't that be config_eth1?
Comment 2 Willard Dawson 2009-07-06 14:06:41 UTC
Thanks for the feedback, but I think it doesn't matter about config_eth0 being in /etc/conf.d/net. If I change that file to read:

config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
config_eth1=( "dhcp" )
modules=( "!iwconfig" "wpa_supplicant" )
wpa_supplicant_eth1="-B -Dwext -ieth1 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf"

... then at least iwconfig is NOT used, but then wpa_supplicant is also NOT used.
Comment 3 Willard Dawson 2009-07-09 11:19:24 UTC
This bug can likely be closed. I attempted to `emerge -ue system` and stumbled into http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=276715 due to emerge failure on openrc. Whle re-examining the settings, I found a typographical error in my own instance of /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6, which had not been properly migrated to /etc/conf.d/modules.

So, attribute this "bug" to operator error.

Apologies...
Comment 4 Kamu 2009-07-21 06:29:10 UTC
You must read "/usr/share/doc/openrc/net.example"
(Not /etc/conf.d/net.example)

some syntax changed.

modules=("wpa_supplicant") -> modules="wpa_supplicant"
