Description Ferry 2009-07-02 10:02:44 UTC
Hi there,

yesterday I updated my ~amd64 system. Rdesktop already always had performance issues, but only with certain applications. Searching on the web I think that was only with vector based stuff. However, now performance on everything is worthless. I can see it drawing the desktop icons 1 by 1. Approximately 1 per 1-2 seconds. Scrolling the email list in outlook takes ages.

It's not a network problem, I have a 1Gbit network connection to the terminal server as I'm on location. It's obviously something with the way it's rendered on my laptop as Xorg is using 100% CPU on one of the 2 cores (apparently it's not threaded). Total CPU usage shows 50% as the other core is idle. Minimizing rdesktop results in CPU load drop to 0-1%.

There were around 60 packages updated. Guessing it's the update from xorg-server-1.6.??? to 1.6.1.901-r5

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. rdesktop to terminal server
2. Note that basically everything sucks in speed

Actual Results:
Speed is so horrible it's not workable. You'd like to complain with company/collegues that windows sucks, but unfortunately it really is a X/rdesktop/intel video render issue, so you just stay quiet and pretend everything is fine as otherwise they will say linux sucks.

Expected Results:
Workable situation, showing linux just works (tm).

Currently here isn't enough information in this bug report to proceed, so you should really find the cause of this problem.

You could mask the new xorg-server and see if that fixes the problem.
Comment 2 Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-07-05 09:24:19 UTC
My first guess would be x11-base/xorg-server, too. I have similar problems with my Gentoo inside of a virtualbox-VM and fluxbox. Moving any window is painfully slow and your experience sounds very similar. So please downgrade xorg-server to the latest 1.5 version and report back if the problem persists...
Comment 3 Ferry 2009-07-06 09:53:03 UTC
Seems to be (largely) solved with x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.1.902. It always had some performance issues already on some specific things, but largely it's fast again.

Still have to update rdesktop to net-misc/rdesktop-1.6.0-r3 which apparently came out a couple of days ago.
