Description pat 2009-06-28 09:25:36 UTC
X crashes when hotplugging/unplugging a wacom tablet. mine is a graphire 4 but i have reports of bamboo too (see comment on linked blog)

error messages from the X log:
(EE) Wacom Graphire4 4x5 pad: Top/Bottom area overlaps with another devices.
(EE) Wacom Graphire4 4x5 cursor: Top/Bottom area overlaps with another devices.
(EE) Wacom Graphire4 4x5 eraser: Top/Bottom area overlaps with another devices.

i found a solution for this, a change to /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-x11-input.fdi fixes it:
- <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input">
+ <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.touchpad">
      <match key="info.product" contains="Wacom">
        <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">wacom</merge>

a blog entry (german) where i posted my solution some time ago, please tell me when you need a translation
http://doppelhertz.wordpress.com/2009/04/24/xinputhotplug-teil-4-der-erfolg-geht-weiter/

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. hotplug a wacom tablet on a system with xorg-server 1.5
Actual Results:
X crashes

Expected Results:
tablet should work with pressure sensitivity and such, without crashing X

Where does the /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-x11-input.fdi file come from, I don't have it. My file at /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-x11-input.fdi does not contain any wacom specifics.
Comment 2 pat 2009-07-03 16:45:42 UTC
i'm not sure where i have that file from. from an earlier blog entry i now know that i found the contents for it from other blogs and google search results...

i didn't even know there is /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/

so, if hotplug works without any problems on a fresh install you can probably set this to invalid (and i will update my blog...)
Comment 3 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-07-05 12:17:31 UTC
Pat, could you please test for us whether you experience this problem by moving your /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-x11-input.fdi somewhere else, rebooting the box, and seeing if you still experience the overlapping issue?
Comment 4 pat 2009-07-07 07:54:52 UTC
tablet still works fine after i removed my wacom .fdi file

thanks for the hint with the default fdi files
Comment 5 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-07-07 10:47:39 UTC
Ok, thanks very much for testing that...
Comment 6 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-07-07 10:48:04 UTC
Marking as INVALID, since it wasn't anything that came with the package that went wrong...
