This is very likely a hardware stability problem. Xfree86 generally brings out extreme stability problems like this. Try memtest86 and cpuburn from freshmeat to diagnose the problem. it is probably due to bad memory or an undercooled CPU. This is almost certainly the problem if you emerge xfree again and it dies in a slightly *different* place on your second try.
