Installation fails because something hangs.
(In reply to comment #0) I found that ebuilds trying to get code from repositories (SVN and GIT, maybe CVS) hang -- first, they call SVN or whatever and very quickly go into an infinite loop of sorts. I am using Perl-5.5.8-r6 (the newest one in Portage). Previously I didn't have this problem, but now after system recompile with GCC 4.4.0-r1 + GRAPHITE optimizations in CFLAGS (and -O3) I found this Perl thing. Recompiling perl and svn with sane CFLAGS (-02 -pipe) doesn't help. Example hang: emerge the live ebuild of mplayer. Could we bump the severity to blocker? In the end it makes it nearly impossible to emerge --update world.
app-text/po4a-0.36.4 contains a patch (<https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=269650#c7>) to workaround the problem. We are still searching for the real cause.
"Installation fails because something hangs". Which installation? What causes it to hang? We will probably never know since Torsten has retired and there's no report attached to this bug, no data, nothing. Looking at linked bugs, it seems they have been resolved and closed. This bug is no longer relevant. Closing it.
