Ntpd exits with code 0377 not long after starting the service. It leaves no error messages. Reproducible: Always
Created attachment 195453 [details] backtrace I set a breakpoint in exit.

Created attachment 195455 [details] ntp.conf This happens after a "synchronized to" message in /var/log/messages.
so run ntpd manually with -ddddn
This didn't happen for a while so I couldn't get the needed messages. I recompiled with debug use flag, and ran ntpd manually with -ddddn. These are the last couple of lines it logs. The thing I notice in these messages is that first it says "synchronized to..." and a bit later "...time correction... exceeds sanity limit..." plus that last message isn't logged. clock_filter: n 5 off 2561.547105 del 0.021882 dsp 0.438289 jit 0.025018, age 0 select: endpoint -1 2560.994237 select: endpoint 0 2561.547105 select: endpoint 1 2562.099973 cluster: survivor 213.154.229.26 metric 2.552868 select: combine offset 2561.547105 report_event: system event 'event_peer/strat_chg' (0x04) status 'sync_alarm, sync_ntp, 2 events, event_restart' (0xc621) addto_syslog: synchronized to 213.154.229.26, stratum 2 poll_update: at 259 213.154.229.26 flags 0041 poll 6 burst 0 last 259 next 325 clock_update: at 259 assoc 4 local_clock: assocID 24737 offset 2561.547104910 freq -142.553 state 1 addto_syslog: time correction of 2562 seconds exceeds sanity limit (1000); set clock manually to the correct UTC time. report_event: system event 'event_fault' (0x02) status 'sync_alarm, sync_ntp, 3 events, event_peer/strat_chg' (0xc634)
looks like this is correct behavior LOG_ERR time correction of ? seconds exceeds sanity limit (?); set clock manually to the correct UTC time. Fatal error. Better do what it says, then restart the daemon. Be advised NTP and Unix know nothing about local time zones. The clock must be set to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Believe it; by international agreement abbreviations are in French and descriptions are in English.
True. But that message about the sanity limit and what to do to fix it, was not logged. It only showed up on the terminal after I ran it manually. Even though it seems to be quite important. That's why I didn't know what to do to fix it and why I opened this bug report.
