Currently ebuild for the latest legacy nvidia drivers requires <xorg-server-1.5.99. (I own GeForce 7300GT GPU, so I can't use later driver versions.)

This is wrong: 173.14.18 compiles and works fine with xorg-server-1.6.1.901-r3. Also this solves problem with applications requires xorg-server >= 1.6.0.
