Description Patrick Haak 2009-06-19 15:01:47 UTC
Hello together,

following problems drives me crazy:

After login at gdm, gnome starts to boot. The small gnome-gentoo window pups up and everything seems to work fine. The background is loaded too. But i don't get a gnome-pannel or symbols. Everythink i see is the background and the mouse (which is working).
A "ps -e" tells me that gnome-pannel etc. are loaded!

I tried the following things to fix this:

1. removing .gconf* and .gnome* folders of the user i login to + reboot. No Change.
2. emerge --sync and a emerge --update --deep world + reboot. No Change
3. Remerging gnome + Reboot. No Change

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot the machine
2. Login to GDM

Actual Results:
The monitor shows the actual Gnome background-image i choosed and the mouse (which i can move). Thats all. No gnome-pannel, no desktop symbols.

Expected Results:
Gnome should start and show me the desktop symbols and the gnome pannel etc.

Last thing i changed to my system (as far as i remember) were the following commands:

emerge --sync
emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=net-print/cups-1.3.10"

I will try to swap to 2.6.29 kernel now, which was installed after update and recompile NVIDIA how the log says.
But this still does not explain this behaviour.
Comment 5 Patrick Haak 2009-06-19 15:28:44 UTC
I have to add the information - that it worked like a charme last month. After installing new version of cups (last thing i remember i did) it stopped working.
Comment 6 Patrick Haak 2009-06-23 08:39:50 UTC
I changed to the newest kernel and recompiled the nvidia driver. Still no change?
Is there any log i can look into?
Comment 7 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-06-28 08:47:35 UTC
what's you nvidia driver version ? recent nvidia drivers caused weird behavior in the recent past.

I am using 180.29. I did a complete reinstall of my system. No change! :(

I solved forcing this

more /etc/env.d/99xdg-gdm
XDG_DATA_DIRS="/usr/share/gdm"

this is already what you should have with xdg-utils-1.0.2-r3 and gdm-2.20.10-r1

what version of gdm do you have ?
Comment 11 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-07-27 10:05:48 UTC
closing invalid per comment #9 since it should already be set to that value.
