Description Stefano 2009-06-15 11:07:59 UTC
After upgrading to kernel 2.6.29-r5 from 2.6.27-r7 (gentoo sources), FN+F8 key on my Dell E6400 (toggle to ext monitor) stopped working.

Not just that, it blinks the monitor on the host to a black screen from which it is impossible to recover (e.g. pressing FN-F8 again doesn't help).

Advice on troubleshooting it?

Reproducible: Always

Additional testing: the machine doesn't lock up (it responds to soft reboot through power key, and caps/num lock also seemingly work), just blacks out.

If I use the fn-f8 key from console I can export the screen to the external port without issue and return.

Under X this does not work correctly. I am using nvidia's own drivers, version 177.82. The newer one exhibited problems also with the old kernel.
Comment 5 Stefano 2009-06-15 12:20:33 UTC
Tried also to upgrade to latest stable, latest unstable, earlier stable. Same behavior: 2.6.27 always works, 2.6.29 always blacks out.

FYI, just in case someone ever wishes to pick up this bug, with 2.6.28-r5 the behaviour is similar

Brace yourselves for an Ubuntu wiki link:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting

Please do try the xev command on the "Step-by-step Troubleshooting" section and check if you get any actions for the FN+F8 combo (also try other FN combos that actually work to compare the output.).
If you are using Gnome, try killing the gnome-power-manager first (Yes, it surely seems like a kernel regression, but I just want to be sure).

Thanks!

Do you mean that you tried with gentoo-sources-2.6.30*?
Can you also try with the latest 2.6.31-rc?

Tried with 2.6.30, same as above. Blacks out, no way to get anything back.

It looks like this bug exists also in Debian:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=540711

Please test the latest git-sources, and upon failure, file this upstream at http://bugzilla.kernel.org and paste the url here.

I seemingly resolved this bug by enabling the video ACPI module. Don't ask...
