Description B Nice 2009-06-14 13:47:32 UTC
Using the same working .config (and make oldconfig make && make modules_install) from kernel 2.6.27-gentoo-r8, No sound is directed to the laptop speakers with any kernel after 2.6.27. Sound can be heard (with headphones) via the headphone jack, mic jack, output jack(front & back), and 5 surround sound jacks.

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-763592.html is the list of everything that has been tried.

Since that forum thread, I have also tried 2.6.27 (it works), 2.6.28-r5, 2.6.29-r5, 2.6.30 (gentoo and vanilla) it doesn't work. I have also tried various versions of the snd-hda-intel codecs with no apparent change.

FYI. It also occurs if I try playing sound from the command-line. No GDM/XDM running.
Comment 12 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2009-08-19 20:54:00 UTC
I did not check the forum thread, but can you make sure no channels are muted by using alsamixer.

Someone reported that channels were muted after each reboot.
Comment 13 B Nice 2009-08-19 21:06:17 UTC
I have checked, and nothing is muted. Using kernels newer then 2.6.28 cause them to be muted after each reboot, but un-muting does not change it only playing music through the connections and not the speakers.
Comment 14 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2009-08-19 22:05:19 UTC
Looks like upstream alsa has a report on this issue
Comment 15 Brayan Arraes (YacK) 2009-08-20 02:59:19 UTC
this issue was fixed before gentoo-sources-2.6.30,

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff_plain;h=679d92ed1403b6cf9a19aa42ec62b81cae1aa017
Comment 16 B Nice 2009-08-20 09:43:30 UTC
Except, I do have a front panel. Unless gentoo-sources / vanilla sources 2.6.29 - 2.6.30-gentoo-r5/2.6.30.5 do not have this fix, it doesn't actually fix the problem for my hardware (HP HDX 9300)
Comment 17 Brayan Arraes (YacK) 2009-08-20 13:10:05 UTC
A bit more details are found in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio.txt.
read this maybe help
Comment 18 Brayan Arraes (YacK) 2009-08-20 13:39:40 UTC
please make sure your channels aren't mute(alsamixer) if not, please try to reload module with 5stack-no-fp as parameter
Comment 19 B Nice 2009-08-22 20:12:51 UTC
5stack-no-fp kills sound from all the front jacks, as well as no sound from the speaker. Still allows sound from the rear jacks.
5stack Sound from all front and rear jacks, but not the speakers.
3stack kills all but 1 of the 3 rear jacks, but the front works, and no speaker.
ref Sound from all front and rear jacks, but not the speakers
ref-no-jd Sound from all front and rear jacks, but not the speakers
auto Sound from all front and rear jacks, but not the speakers

This is all with kernel 2.6.30-gentoo-r5

Comment 20 Brayan Arraes (YacK) 2009-08-23 00:07:55 UTC
alsa team have some thing to add here ?
Comment 21 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2009-09-24 21:57:45 UTC
We'll follow the upstream bug.
Comment 22 B Nice 2009-12-05 14:40:14 UTC
As of kernel 2.6.32-gentoo, the sound works out of the speakers and out of the various ports. No extra options required.
