I can't seem to find where subversion is used during build of the package.. maybe it's an old depend that was left in?

Nothing suspect about this dependency. The build system uses it to determine what revision it was built with. It will add 'M' for modified. Unless you feel like hardcoding that and having the ebuild writer update it each time, removing this dependency increases the maintenance burden.
