Description Douglas A. Parrish 2003-08-26 06:06:11 UTC
I'm sitting behind a proxy which will not allow ftp traffic. In order to get
gnome to emerge properly, I had to add a http:// URL to thirdpartymirrors.
Adding http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome to the list for gnome allowed the emerge
to complete successfully.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Emerge without the mod
2. Emerge fails to fetch necessary files

Expected Results:
It should have installed.

I disagree. If you have trouble retrieving a file, you should download it yourself and add it to your distfiles directory.

And why is that better than actually utilizing the mirrors provided by the distributor and providing the end-user with a more satisfying experience?

i dont fancy hacking the URL's away from ftp and to http is a solid solution to this. more, in my opinion, portage might provide a 'preferred protocol' variable or similar, and then try the protocols in that order. that's pure speculation though on my part about portage development.

we could just add them both for all i care.. if i remember correctly one of the gnome URLs might be faulty anyway.

already commited another mirror as http:// a while ago. more could ofc. be added.
