This is strange, since dvipng depends on virtual/latex-base which should pull in texlive-core.

Do you have texlive-core installed?
Does /usr/lib*/libkpathsea.* exist?

Ah this starts to get fun...

I have virtual/latex-base instealled; I don't have texlive-core (it was removed by some blocker and now it's not merging back); Portage still tries to build dvipng...

How about if you add --deep? Seems like that should pull it in.
