Description Mars Liu 2009-06-01 20:39:28 UTC
fbsplash fails to display the theme at bootup and leaves the following messages in the dmesg:
splash_util.sta:2664 map pfn expected mapping type uncached-minus for a0000-aa000, got write-back
fbsplashd.stati:2706 map pfn expected mapping type uncached-minus for a0000-aa000, got write-back
fbsplashd.stati[2714] general protection ip:8172ed1 sp:b6eec13c error:0 in fbsplashctl[8048000+1af000]

The theme I use to test is livecd-2007.0
grub kernel options:
video=vesafb:640x480-32@60,mtrr,ywrap splash=silent,theme:livecd-2007.0 console=tty1

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.configure the kernel with buildin framebuffer driver "VESA VGA graphic support","Map the console to the primary display device" and "Support for the Framebuffer Console Decorations".
2.compile and install the kernel.
3.use splashutil to build an initramfs
4.configure grub
5.reboot

Actual Results:
black screen

Expected Results:
a picture should be shown

There is a segfault of fbsplashd at shutdown, but I don't know if it is related to this bug.

Please attach your full kernel config and full kernel log (i.e. `dmesg` output). Also, please note that these command line settings are incorrect -- vesafb does not accept a mode string (uvesafb does), and the mode has to be set using the vga= parameter.

Furthermore, the kernel log excerpt you provided suggests that this problem could be MTRR-related. To check whether this is the case, please boot with the 'nomtrr' vesafb option and see whether anything changes.

my kernel configure file

There is my kernel configure file

I try "video=vesafb, nomtrr Vga=769", also with 784 and 785. none of them works, they all have the same error:
fbsplashd.stati:2737 map pfn expected mapping type uncached-minus for a0000-aa000, got write-back
fbsplashd.stati[2740] general protection ip:8172ed1 sp:b6ed713c error:0 in fbsplashctl[8048000+1af000]

if I remove the "vga-16 color grahic support", then splash claims can't find a logo config file "0x0.cfn". I think it means the splash_util can't determine the screen resolution even I specify the resolution with vga=XXX

Comment 4 Michal Januszewski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-06-08 17:51:04 UTC
OK, the problem is that you're using the vga16fb driver. This is probably a bad idea, as it only provides low resolutions with a limited number of colors, which means you won't be able to use all the features offered by fbsplash.

I think we should try to figure out how to make (u)vesafb work instead. My advice would be to try uvesafb, which should be easier to manage. Please see http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/uvesafb/ for info about what to do. If it doesn't work for you, please post your full dmesg output with uvesafb enabled and vga16fb disabled.
Comment 5 Mars Liu 2009-06-09 04:37:00 UTC
Thank you for your patience, Michal. Yes, the problem is caused by the vga16fb driver. I removed the vga16fb and follow the instruction to install uvesafb, now everything works fine. :D
