Description Antwane Mason 2009-05-24 22:23:40 UTC
When running Eterm, I receive the following error:
Eterm: Error: Unable to load font "-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-*-*-*-c-*-iso10646-1". Falling back on "k14"
Eterm: FATAL: Couldn't load the fallback font either. Giving up.

I added "-ggdb" to CFLAGS to /etc/make.conf and do
echo "x11-terms/eterm debug" >> /etc/portage/package.use
FEATURES="nostrip" emerge eterm
and ran gdb --args Eterm and run. The only thing extra this told me was the error code, which is code 0377.
bt didn't do anything because there was no stack.

Comment 7 Claes 2009-06-24 15:02:51 UTC
I'd be willing to poke around the sources a bit to figure out what happens.
Could someone ebuild knowledgeable inform me how to get debugging symbols into the binary? (as there is no debug USE and the -ggdb in comment #1 didn't work)

This is my strace from eterm
Comment 9 David Alanis 2009-06-27 17:49:10 UTC
I also ran into this problem and since I've been away from Gentoo for some time I've had a problem trying to figure this one out. But according to some posts supposedly I was missing the misc-font-misc package.

To make the story short I decided to install aterm instead and as soon as it began to emerge I saw it was blocking particular flags and so I added one of these flags and when I went to emerge again it added afterstep which I know this has nothing to do with this but then it emerged giblib-1.2.4.ebuild.

To my surprise I ran aterm and it worked fine. After a couple of hours of trying to configure my Tomcat installation I typed the wrong term Eterm and what do I know it works!

There are a couple of dependency issues with this version of eterm one of them being: or the USE flags are screwy.

[I--] [ ] x11-terms/eterm-0.9.5 (0)

Here is my portage information:

http://pastebin.ca/1476624

Cheers.
Comment 10 David Alanis 2009-06-27 23:01:42 UTC
Sorry for my bad English in my previous comment. I am saying that hence installing giblib-1.2.4 I no longer get this message:

Eterm: Error: Unable to load font
"-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-*-*-*-c-*-iso10646-1". Falling back on
"k14"

And Eterm works as expected.
Comment 11 John Moe 2009-07-08 03:13:07 UTC
I've run into the same error (unable to load font, couldn't load fallback either) on a few installations. Emerging media-fonts/font-misc-misc fixes it for me each time. This sounds to me like font-misc-misc is a dependency of eterm; can we get it put into the ebuild?
Comment 12 Timothy Vicars 2009-08-16 10:05:58 UTC
After trying everything above, I was able to solve this issue on my end by using USE="-unicode" emerge eterm
Comment 13 J. Cotton 2009-09-12 23:21:58 UTC

This worked for me too.
Comment 14 Christopher Howard 2009-10-23 05:43:09 UTC
Exact same problem here. I tried using my own fonts with Eterm -F <fontname> but that didn't work.

I'm sorry, somehow missed comments 12 and 13 the first time. That fixed it for me as well.

Except of course, now I don't have unicode. Which I do actually use in the terminal, believe it or not.

(Sorry, should have put that in the last comment!)

Hi

I had the same problem with a fresh installation of Gentoo 10.1 but fixed it installing: media-fonts/font-adobe-100dpi and media-fonts/font-adobe-75dpi plus a few more and restarting the related services.

I usually have many fonts for design purposes.

Bye

I have the same problem. Compiling eterm without unicode fixed it for me.

dhp@uranus ~ $ Eterm -g 111x94 -F 1
Eterm: Error: Unable to load font "1". Falling back on "fixed"
dhp@uranus ~ $

I have media-fonts/font-adobe-100dpi media-fonts/font-adobe-75dpi and media-fonts/font-misc-misc in.

remerge with -unicode did *NOT* fix it.

I don't have the error on launching without args; I have only, and always with the -F option.

Sorry, was using --font instead of --default-font-index . My mistake. No bug for me.

please retest on a fully updated system with 0.9.6-r1 version
