Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-05-24 16:17:39 UTC
Seems very similar to bug 139470 . There are other gnome apps affected by this, but I am not sure if I should send a different bug report for each one or not. Please let me know

After switching to USE="-esd" in make.conf of one of the computers I admin, I get a lot of apps not compiling anymore due this error

I attach build.log

Thanks

Have you done a full revdep-rebuild? Lots of things ended up with -lesd in the .la files, which pulls in the linker dep. revdep-rebuild *should* fix this.
Comment 3 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-05-29 19:12:18 UTC
I have seen that lots of gnome packages stop build just while running revdep-rebuild :-(
Comment 4 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-05-30 18:37:34 UTC
This upstream bug:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=405352

makes me think this is an upstream problem, also, its comment #5 seems to suggest to file bugs for each affected app, do you agree? (I ask you before you will know much more about this than me)

Thanks
Comment 5 Daniel Gryniewicz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-06-01 18:59:17 UTC
Please don't open bugs upstream on this for now.

Instead, run this:

find  /usr/lib/ -name "*.la" -exec grep -H esd {} \;

That will print a list of .la files with -lesd in them. You can use equery b or qfile to find out which packages own those, and re-emerge them. If you package them all onto the same command line, the order should even be correct.
Comment 6 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-06-03 07:05:43 UTC
It worked :-D

I finally run:
emerge -1av --jobs --keep-going `qfile -Cq $(find /usr/lib/ -name "*.la" -exec grep -H esd {} \; | cut -d: -f1)`

And, after that, revdep-rebuild

Maybe this should be documented if esd USE flag won't be enabled by default in desktop profiles

Thanks a lot
Comment 7 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-06-08 22:27:35 UTC
closing invalid because esd is just one of those lib that creeps in everywhere, like kerberos. It is well known switching this on or off is a pain.
